WhatsApp Web Testing Chat Themes with 49 Colour Options: Major Personalisation Update Incoming

WhatsApp Web is set to receive a significant customisation boost, as the platform is currently testing chat themes featuring as many as 49 different colour options. According to reliable reports from WABetaInfo, this long-awaited feature will allow users to personalise their conversations directly from the browser, moving beyond the basic light and dark modes currently available on the web version.

The update introduces a wide variety of themes that go far beyond simple colour changes. Users will be able to customise message bubbles, backgrounds, and overall chat aesthetics with multiple shades and tonal variations of the same hue. For instance, blue lovers can choose from options like Default Blue, Default Blue Tonal, Default Blue Minimal, Sky Blue, Sky Blue Tonal, Royal Blue, and Royal Blue Tonal. This granular approach ensures users can fine-tune the look of their chats to match their mood or style preferences.

Why This Matters for Users

Chat themes are already available on the mobile apps (Android and iOS) and the Mac desktop client, where users can select preset combinations or mix colours for bubbles and wallpapers. The feature has proven popular for helping users quickly distinguish between personal chats, work conversations, and group discussions at a glance. Bringing a similar — and even more extensive — selection to WhatsApp Web will make the browser experience feel more complete and consistent with the rest of the ecosystem.

With 49 options including the default theme, the variety is impressive. Many themes are subtle variations in tone and intensity, giving users greater flexibility than a limited palette would allow. This could be especially useful for power users who spend hours on WhatsApp Web for work or study.

Expected Features and Rollout

The new chat themes are expected to support both preset themes (which change bubbles and wallpaper together) and custom mixing. While exact details on wallpaper integration or per-chat application are still under testing, the core focus remains on vibrant colour customisation for message bubbles.

As with most WhatsApp features, the update is currently in the testing phase and has not yet rolled out to all users. A stable release for WhatsApp Web is likely in the coming weeks or months, following the usual beta-to-production timeline.

This development reflects Meta’s continued effort to enhance user experience across all platforms. Previously limited customisation on the web version often frustrated users who enjoyed the colourful themes on their phones. The addition of nearly 50 colour choices should bridge that gap effectively.

In short, WhatsApp Web is evolving from a functional messaging tool into a more visually engaging platform. If you frequently use WhatsApp on your desktop or laptop, this upcoming feature promises to make your chats more personal and enjoyable.
