Meta has officially introduced a new feature called Instants, aiming to transform how users share everyday moments on Instagram. Designed for speed and simplicity, Instants focuses on spontaneous, unfiltered photo sharing between friends, directly through Instagram’s inbox.
Alongside this feature, Meta is also testing a standalone Instants app in select regions, signalling its growing focus on real-time communication and private interactions.
Instants is a lightweight, in-the-moment sharing feature that allows users to quickly capture and send photos without the need for heavy editing. Positioned within the bottom-right corner of Instagram’s direct messaging interface, the feature is built to encourage casual and immediate interactions.
Unlike traditional posts or Stories, Instants prioritises raw and authentic content. Users can add a caption before sending a photo, but once shared, no further edits are allowed. This approach reflects a shift toward more genuine, less curated social media experiences.
The Instants feature closely resembles the core functionality of Snapchat, particularly its disappearing photo messages. Once an Instant is viewed by the recipient, it automatically disappears, ensuring a more private and temporary exchange.
Photos are delivered in a stacked format within the recipient’s inbox, making it easy to browse multiple Instants. Users can react or reply directly within Instagram DMs, maintaining a seamless communication flow.
However, Meta has integrated this feature within Instagram’s ecosystem, combining ephemeral messaging with its existing safety tools and user controls.
Instants enables users to capture and send photos instantly, reducing the steps involved in traditional sharing.
The feature discourages over-editing. Users can only add captions before sending, promoting authenticity.
Shared photos vanish after being viewed, enhancing privacy and encouraging casual communication.
Instants is embedded directly within Instagram’s messaging system, eliminating the need for switching apps.
Meta has introduced additional tools to enhance the Instants experience. Photos shared via Instants are stored privately in an archive for up to one year. This archive allows users to revisit their shared moments and even compile them into recap Stories.
This feature bridges the gap between temporary sharing and long-term memory preservation, offering users the best of both worlds.
Another useful addition is the Undo option, which allows users to retract a sent Instant before it is opened by the recipient.
In addition to integrating Instants within Instagram, Meta is experimenting with a dedicated Instants app for Android and iOS users. The app is currently available in select countries and is designed to provide faster access to the camera for instant sharing.
Users can log in using their existing Instagram credentials, and all shared Instants will sync seamlessly across both platforms. While still in the experimental phase, the standalone app indicates Meta’s intention to compete more directly in the real-time messaging space.
Meta has ensured that Instants aligns with Instagram’s existing privacy and moderation framework. Users can control who sees their Instants by sharing them only with Close Friends or mutual followers.
Key privacy features include:
For younger users, Instants integrates with Instagram’s Teen Accounts and Family Centre tools. These include screen time management, automatic Sleep Mode between 10 PM and 7 AM, and parental notifications when teens download the standalone app.
With Instants, Meta is clearly positioning itself to compete more aggressively with platforms like Snapchat, which have long dominated the ephemeral messaging space. By embedding similar functionality within Instagram, Meta leverages its massive user base while offering a familiar yet enhanced experience.
The introduction of a standalone app further reinforces this strategy, potentially opening new avenues for user engagement and growth.
